In 1871 George still with the Elwoods as 'son-in-law' , but no Emma.

Possibilities:

Just maybe George was (a very young) Emma's son not her brother.

Maybe the Elwoods were 'friend-aunt/uncle', benefactors who took in the eldest single daughter and youngest son.
